Thornel® Continuous Pitch-Based Carbon Fibers
Back to Carbon Fiber Home
Mesophase pitch-based fibers are available from Cytec Carbon Fibers in continuous tows of 2,000 filaments and in some grades, 4,000 filaments. Mesophase pitch - a liquid crystal form of condensed aromatic - offers the ability to form carbon fibers which have advantages in many applications. For example, you can achieve higher density, dramatically higher thermal conductivity, more negative CTE, higher modulus, and superior frictional characteristics when compared to PAN-based fibers. The following carbon grades offer an excellent balance of cost and performance for carbon/carbon applications as well as other specific applications.

Some grades of mesophase pitch-based fibers can be technically classified as "graphite", and are available from Cytec Carbon Fibers in continuous tows of 2000 filaments. These mesophase-derived fibers are specially prepared and processed to form graphite , which displays high density, high thermal conductivity, more negative CTE and high modulus. These fibers excel in applications such as polymeric, carbon/ carbon and metal matrix composites which require stiffness and thermal properties. These are the work-horse fibers for many space and thermal applications and are gaining acceptance in industrial applications which take advantage of these unique combination of properties. The suffix "S" refers to the "surface treatment" that is performed to enhance bonding characteristics of these fibers in polymeric composites.

Ultra-high conductivity graphite grades
Thornel K-800X and K-1100 carbon fibers are continuous strand 2k pitch-based fibers designed for the most demanding thermal management applications. These materials are used in applications where high performance and maximum weight reduction must be combined. Thanks to ultra-high longitudinal thermal conductivity, these Thornel® fibers can demonstrate 2 to 3 times the performance of copper, and 4 to 5 times the performance of aluminum.
