Thornel® Continuous Pitch-Based Carbon Fibers
Back to Carbon Fiber Home
Mesophase pitch-based fibers are available from Cytec Carbon Fibers in continuous tows of 2,000 filaments and in some grades, 4,000 filaments. Mesophase pitch - a liquid crystal form of condensed aromatic - offers the ability to form carbon fibers which have advantages in many applications. For example, you can achieve higher density, dramatically higher thermal conductivity, more negative CTE, higher modulus, and superior frictional characteristics when compared to PAN-based fibers. The following carbon grades offer an excellent balance of cost and performance for carbon/carbon applications as well as other specific applications.

Ultra-High Conductivity Graphite Grades
Thornel carbon fibers are continuous strand 2k pitch-based fibers designed for the most demanding thermal management applications. These materials are used in applications where high performance and maximum weight reduction must be combined. Thanks to ultra-high longitudinal thermal conductivity, these Thornel® fibers can demonstrate 2 to 3 times the performance of copper, and 4 to 5 times the performance of aluminum.
